Brisbane Brass Members Shine at Australian Youth Orchestras National Music Camp

Adelaide, January, 2024 — It’s been an exhilarating few weeks for Brisbane Brass, with two of its members making headlines on the national stage. Congratulations are in order for Nicholas Lord and Jack Gawith, who have been selected to participate in the Australian Youth Orchestra’s prestigious National Music Camp for 2024. Their participation, alongside Musical Director Elena Katahanas, who was one of this year’s conducting fellows, highlights an impressive moment for the Brisbane Brass community.

The National Music Camp, renowned for its rigorous selection process, brings together some of Australia’s most talented young musicians. Lord and Gawith had the unique opportunity to collaborate with their peers under the direction of internationally acclaimed conductors Toby Thatcher and Ariel Zuckermann. Their involvement in the camp not only showcased their individual talents but also brought great pride to Brisbane Brass and Queensland.

Nicholas Lord and Jack Gawith’s experiences at the camp included performing with Australia’s leading young musicians, further honing their skills and expanding their musical horizons.

“The experience has been nothing short of incredible,” said Lord. “Working with such esteemed conductors and alongside other passionate musicians has been both inspiring and educational. I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited to bring what I’ve learned back to Brisbane.”

Gawith echoed this sentiment, emphasising the impact of the camp on his growth as a musician. “Being part of the National Music Camp has been a dream come true. It’s been a privilege to learn from the best and to connect with fellow young musicians who share the same passion for music.”

Adding to the excitement, Elena Katahanas, the Musical Director of Brisbane Brass 2, was selected as one of this year’s conducting fellows. This opportunity allowed her to work closely with Zuckermann and Thatcher, as well as to lead the National Music Camp Brass Ensemble. Her role as a conducting fellow provided valuable insights and experience, further enhancing her skills and contributing to the high standards of Brisbane Brass.

“Being a conducting fellow at the National Music Camp was an extraordinary experience,” said Katahanas. “It was an honour to work alongside such distinguished conductors and to lead the talented ensemble. The experience will undoubtedly influence my approach to directing Brisbane Brass 2 and inspire our members.”

The participation of Lord, Gawith, and Katahanas underscores the high caliber of talent within Brisbane Brass and reflects the organisation’s dedication to providing educational pathways that lead to life-long learning for its musicians. Their achievements are a testament to the strong support of their fellow band members and the local community.

Brisbane Brass extends its heartfelt congratulations to Nicholas Lord, Jack Gawith, and Elena Katahanas for their outstanding accomplishments. Their success at the Australian Youth Orchestra’s National Music Camp not only highlights their individual excellence but also enriches the entire Brisbane Brass family. The ensemble eagerly anticipates the positive impact their experiences will bring to their future performances and endeavors.
