Expressions of Interest: BB1 A Grade Brass Musical Director

Josh McKechie has announced his decision to step down as Musical Director of BB1 after many years leading the group. We thank Josh for his commitment and skill in leading the organisation and the band.

Brisbane Brass Music Assn Inc is now accepting expressions of interest for the position of A Grade Musical Director. Please apply with a one page cover letter outlining relevant experience, skills and suitability. If you wish to provide anything extra such as video of a concert/conducting/event, etc please send a YouTube link or similar (NOTE: it doesn’t need to be from a brass band, just show us what you’ve got!)

Background:

Brisbane Brass Music Association Inc (BB) is one of Australia’s largest brass brand associations, a registered charity and not-for-profit community organisation. We are seeking a Musical Director forBB1, our A-Grade Brass Band. The MD will be responsible for music selection, calendar planning, and conducting performances and contests. Our members are motivated Volunteer Musicians who play to a very high standard and aim to be nationally competitive.

Brisbane Brass Music Association is a family of brass bands, comprising BB3 (Open D-Grade), BB2 (Open B-Grade), and BB1 (Open A-Grade). We are a community-focused organisation with an emphasis on creating performance opportunities for players at all ages and levels, and consider both community performance and contest participation important parts of our musical activities. All three bands stage high quality concerts, play at community events, and participate in both state and national contests.

Brisbane Brass is a financially stable and independent organisation, and the MD position will receive a competitive honorarium. Separate from the honorarium, the MD will also receive a budget for expenses incurred by the band, including music purchases.

Detailed Description:  

  1. The Musical Director will conduct all rehearsals and performances
  2. Will require the ability to co-ordinate and guide the volunteer musicians to assist in the following:
    1. Plan, schedule and coordinate a performance calendar
    2. Plan, prepare for and attend State and National Championship competitions
    3. Collaborate with section leaders to select and plan the specific music for each performance 
    4. Work within the guidelines of the BB Association
    5. Liaise with the BB Management Committee – at the monthly Committee Meeting 
    6. Work with musicians to improve their skills and prepare for performances 
    7. Work with the committee and band managers to assist in recruiting members and managing the administrative details of the Band
    8. Assist in running player auditions as required

Music Directors are the public face of a music group and receive recognition for the group’s accomplishments. 

Requirements:  Excellent interpersonal, leadership and communication skills   In-depth knowledge of music and be proficient in at least one instrument   Be well organised, creative, tenacious and dependable   Be experienced in programming, conducting and hosting performances  Library cataloguing and computer skills
Address:   Currently rehearsing in South Brisbane
Duration:   12 months (with opportunity for continued appointment)
Time RequiredWeekly rehearsals with extra rehearsals leading into contests. Performances at regular scheduled events. Attendance at monthly committee meetings. 
Age Range:   18+
Transport:   Own 

This is a Volunteer Position, remunerated with a competitive honorarium each quarter.
